Biography

Born in 1947, Delhi, Amitava completed his graduation from College of Art, New Delhi in 1972. He was appointed Lecturer at the Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi in 1974. He was a visiting Lecturer at College of Art & Women’s Polytechnic, New Delhi during 1975-77. He received a Fellowship from Federal Republic of Germany for ‘Advanced Exposure to Graphic Design and Exhibition’ in 1989. He received the National Award in 1976. He has co-curated a Contemporary Indian Art show titled ‘The Yellow Deity’ for the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and Museum of Contemporary Art/Ludwig Museum, Budapest, Hungary. Since his first solo exhibition in 1969, he has participated in several exhibitions in India and abroad. Some of his important exhibitions include Bharat Bhavan Biennale, Bhopal, 1987; ‘Contemporary Indian Painting’ and ‘Three Contemporary Artists’, Germany, 1989 & 1991; ‘Indian Songs – Multiple Streams in Contemporary Indian Art’, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney in 1993; Solo shows – Galerie FIA, Amsterdam, 1997; Palette Art Gallery, New Delhi, 2005. A Film ‘A Painters Portrait’ has been made on him by K. Bikram Singh for Doordarshan. He lives and works in New Delhi.
