Biography

Born in 1887 in Beliatore in the Bankura district of West Bengal, Jamini Roy got his Diploma in Fine Arts from Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata (1903-08). He was the most famous pupil of Abanindranath Tagore. He was a Fellow of Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi in 1956 and was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1955. His works have been exhibited across India and abroad including Burlington Gallery, London, 1946; at New York, 1953; at ‘National Exposition of Contemporary Art’ National Gallery of Modern Art, 1991. His works regularly feature in many prestigious art auctions. Several books have been published on his works. He passed away in Kolkata at the age of 85 in 1972.
