Biography

Benjamin Zawalich was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1984. He studied painting at Boston University, and printmaking at Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and the Royal College of Art in London. He has undertaken residencies in Ghana, Japan, China, Argentina, and Italy. Since 2015 he has lived and worked in Chile where he is the creator and director of the Molten Capital Artist Residency that operates out of the Museum of Contemporary Art in the capital of Santiago. With this project Benjamin works with institutions in Latin America, the U.S., Europe and Asia to create a network of exchange related opportunities for local artists in Chile to work in collaborative environments with artists from abroad. About how these experiences have impacted his own work, Benjamin states:

“Working in different countries and within cultures where I tend to initially lack a complete understanding of historical contexts has taught me to look for the qualities in visual elements that become universally recognizable as cultural or significant. I have become interested in the way the repetition of images plays a role in this, and how those images mutate across centuries. Working specifically with printmaking has always offered me a vast array of tools that I could use to mimic this process of multi-generational communication through continuously changing images that hold a consistent story. In this way I can combine more advanced methods like stone lithography or etching, with low resolution materials such as photocopies to create a counterfeit timeline for a culture that never really existed”
