The myths, rites and rituals of Hinduism are deeply woven into the fabric of Indian society. Even to the sceptic or non-believer, certain words and stories invoke emotions and impressions. Amavasya, the moonless night, conjures up images of contrast, flickering lights against darkness and an end against a new beginning.

Statement

Having started out with huge oil painting chock-a-block with detail, I have continuously distilled technique and fine-tuned my focus so much so that even my language has changed. Not only in the subject matter, this progression of ideas has been like a peeling back of layers in each successive work. Reducing color, Clutter, size as well as the layering that was characteristic of my earlier works, my current work has become more austere, and elemental but conversely, the depth of expression has become more intimate, more in-tune with the worker and the subject. In the latter half of this work, I have eliminated even color to suggest not just the blurring of the lines between the man and the metal but the total boundary less amalgamation of the scrap and the worker- giving life to the scrape by making it an integral part of the human being. Where does one begin and the other end?

Statement

During all these years, man and life, their complex co-existence, are the central concerns of my work. I am also sometime fascinated by Nature’s organic qualities, its design and rhythmic construction. People continue to be the dominating influence in my work. For the last few years, I have been deeply disturbed with the man’s brutality upon man, in Iraq, in U.S.A., in Russia, in U.K. or in India. Religious and racial riots in Gujarat, bombing and destruction by one country on another country, terrorist attacks on helpless children in Russia, or on the innocent public in other parts of the world, torture of Iraqi prisoners in Abu Gharib Jail and political killings in the village of Bengal, or other parts of India, torture and rape of women and young girls, have all affected me deeply. This suppressed humanity makes me alert, sad and disturbed. The present turmoil has affected me as a human being and is directly reflected in my art.

Statement

For me, colour is an experience. It is the internalized perception of a world that is complex which in its materiality on canvas or paper becomes the embodiment of a transcendentally lucid concentration. While colour became the core around which my work evolved, it also became the immersive environment within which I explored texture. Then I realized that colour was much more than a mere experience – it became the fulcrum of my foundation and through it I created temporal as well as contemplative energies. The forms that get reduced or magnified in my works are more a passage to my experiences and associations – they are the artistic quest within me, because they are born out of propositions of apply and excavate, add and subtract. In that process they are aimed at the ultimate search – the path of a creative state that seeks integration with the sublime.

Statement

My work is a reflection of the changing face of our nation, through images of the notable celebrities and public figures, the urban elite and the common man on the street. The acute static demeanor of my portrayals lends itself to movement through the vehicles of vibrant and dynamic colours, the composition of patterns and the gentle Indian spirit reminiscent of centuries past fusing with the invasion of modern advents and amenities. Each depiction is charged with innocuous humor personifying the subtle ironies that permeate daily life, which lay in harmony and yet in conflict with the collision of East and West. My paintings are charged with deceptive simplicity, a mirthful lyricism and a spirit of authenticity. Together, they coalesce to form insightful documentations, a visual timeline of our society through the lens of everyday occurrences, object and people. Around each corner of our cities and villages, we encounter a common and still forgettable site of an overcrowded café, a bustling street, or a flower vendor, yet our deadness of seeing leads us to deplorably disregard the modest and unscathed beauty of our rich culture. Through my images of India’s vast panorama, these paintings provoke a heightened consciousness to challenge the viewer.

Whether I am in Norway or Paris or London, I always see colour see colour, it is an intrinsic part of my way of seeing. I come from Rajasthan where colour is celebrated; it is a part and parcel of the everyday life of its inhabitants. I love watching the leaves in autumn. Agni and Jal – the two elements that are so vital in the shastras. If you take the first alphabet of each, it becomes ‘AJ’ – this itself means never ending, eternal and this is the energy that resides in my works.

The art of the small

In a decidedly a typical show it is intriguing when the common thread binding the works together is revealed with an instantaneous look. The artists for this show represent different moments of contemporary Indian art, and they have all strived to converge together around a formal constant, consequently a cursory glance at the works will reveal to the viewer that the leitmotif here is the size of the works. The 9x12 format is an important preoccupation which holds the show together, both conceptually and visually and the attempt while displaying the works have been to highlight a sense of visual drama brought about by the manner in which the works have been displayed. This show comes at a time when the present scenario of the art world is gravitating towards works more interactive in nature, and the practice of presenting works done solely on a configuration of this kind, let alone of such a large number of artists, is considered something of an anomaly. This however is an unabashed avowal of this anomaly, for articulating the contemporary arises from dislodging the everyday way of looking at art.
