Akkitham Narayanan

Biography

Born in 1939 in Kerala, Akkitham Narayanan received a Diploma in Painting from the Government School of Arts and Crafts, Chennai, India. He then studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris on a Government scholarship. He has won the Tamil Nadu State Lalit Kala Akademi Award thrice. He is the recipient of the IV International Festival of Painting Award, in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France. Narayanan's works have been exhibited widely in India and internationally. Akkitham Narayanan lives and works in Paris.

Amit Ambalal

Biography

Born in 1943 in Ahmedabad, he had no formal training in art but worked under the guidance of the veteran artist and teacher Chhaganlal Jadhav. He was a businessman, until he became a full-time painter in 1979. His interest in the Nathdvara School of Painting made him write The Book ‘Krishna as Shrinathji - Rajasthani Paintings from Nathdvara’ which was published by Mapin in 1987. Later an exhibition of Nathdvara paintings from his collection was organised by the CMC Gallery, New Delhi in 1989. He has held over 14 solo shows and also been part of several group shows nationally and internationally including Sixth Triennale, India, 1986; Bharat Bhavan Biennale, 1990; ‘Utsava – Festival of India’, Perth, Australia, 1995; Group show ‘Faces’, Dubai, 2000 and ‘JIVA’, Singapore, 2004. He lives and works in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Angeli Sowani

Biography

Born 1959 in New Delhi, Angeli completed her Degree in Visual Communications, Graphic Design & Illustration from National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad in 1983. She has held her solo shows at Mumbai in 2006, 2001, 2000 & 1997; at Hong Kong in 2002, 2000 & 1998; at London in 2004 and Bangkok in 1995. She has also participated in several group show shows across India and abroad which include Harmony Show , Mumbai in 2007, 2006, 2005 & 2003, Visual Arts Centre, Hong Kong in 2001 & 2002; Contemporary Indian Art, Chicago in 1998. She lives and works in London.

Anjolie Ela Menon

Biography

Born in 1940, Burnpur (West Bengal), Anjolie completed her schooling at Lovedale after which she pursued a degree in English Literature from the Delhi University. Later following a brief spell at Sir J.J. School of Art, she received formal training in painting at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts, Paris on a French Government scholarship from 1959-61. She pursued further studies in France, U.K. and USA on the invitation of respective Governments during 1980-81.

Anjolie is a well-known muralist. She has had over 35 solo shows in India and abroad and has participated in several group shows  along with I, II, III International Triennale by Lalit Kala Akademi in 1968, 1972 & 1975; Paris Biennale, France in1980; at New York & Washington D.C. in 1980.

She is a recipient of Padma Shri by the Government of India and she is on the board of trustees of Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA). Her work was shown in a major retrospective held at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai in 2002, which also toured other towns including Chennai, Delhi and Bangalore. Her life and work has been featured in important publications and films made for Doordarshan and CNN.

She lives and works in New Delhi.

Apurva Desai

Biography

In Apurva Desai's canvas the self is given over to the experience; he paints monumental human forms dissolved into its location. Born 1962 in Baroda , Apurva presently lives and works in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.He pursued Diploma {Painting} from C. N. College of Fine Art, Ahmedabad (1987) and Masters {Painting} from M.S.U, Baroda (1989). He worked for 2 years under the guidance of Rekha Rodwittiya. He has held 15 solo shows including at Art Alive Gallery, New Delhi in 2006 & 2002; at Ahmedabad in 2006, 2002, 1994, 1993, 1991, 1990 & 1987; Kolkata in 1997. He has also participated in several group shows, more prominent amongst which are Emerging India, presented by Art Alive Gallery and S.A. Fine Arts, London, held at London in 2007; Romania in 2005; London in 2003; Goan Art Forum in 1995 and Fifth Northern Region Art Exhibition in Delhi in 1993. He has been honored with several scholarships and awards from Gujarat State Government in 1987-88; Ministry of Human Resources, New Delhi in 1989-90; Kanoria Centre for Arts, Ahmedabad in 1991; Vikram Sarabhai Foundation, New Delhi in 1991-92; awarded by Lalit Kala Akademy Gujarat in 1985, 1991 &1995 and Navdeep Sanskrutik Pratisthan, Gujarat in 1990 for his contributions to Art and Charles Wallace India Trust Residence Award, London in 2003.

Arpana Caur

Biography

Born 1954 in Delhi, Arpana has nearly 30 solo shows to date covering Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, London, Ottawa, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin, New York, Amsterdam Munich, Bangalore and many others cities, her work is seen and appreciated globally. She has also participated in about 40 group shows held in various Indian cities as well as abroad including Greece, USSR, USA, Japan, Germany, Iraq and Cuba. She has also executed ten large murals and paintings including a commission for a large work for the permanent collection at Hiroshima Museum. She has also participated in interactive workshops with other artists and crafts people. Amongst the awards to her credit, VI Triennele India Gold Medal for Painting stands tall. She has been a member of various juries and advisory boards including the National Gallery of Modern Art, Lalit Kala Academy and Sahitya Kala Parishad and her work has been the subject of several dissertations by arts students and scholars. Her work is in several Indian Museums and significant public collections including National Gallery of Modern Art Delhi, Chandigarh Museum, Ethnographic Museum Stockholm, Kunstmuseum Dusseldorf, Bradford Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, U.K., Glenbarra Museum Japan, Hiroshima Museum of Modern Art Japan, Singapore Museum of Modern Art Japan, Singapore Museum of Modern Art, Deutche Bank, Rockefeller Collection, New York. She lives and works in New Delhi.

Binoy Varghese

Biography

Born 1966 in Kerala, Binoy did his National Diploma in Fine Arts from R.L.V College of Fine Arts, Kerala. He was the artist-in-residence at Aicon gallery,new york in 2007; Banff Centre for Arts, Alberta, Canada in 2000 and Cholamandal Artists Village, Chennai during 1994-98. He has held Six one-man shows at New Delhi, Canada, Chennai. He has also participated in three Two-men shows and many group shows which include ‘Reading Paint’, Bangkok in 2007; ‘Definitively Provisional –II’, Copenhagaun, Denmark; 11th Asian Art Biennale, Bangladesh in 2004; Miami Art Festival, Sponsored by Jacob Karpio Gallery Costa Rica in 1999; 41st National Academy Exhibition, Rabindra Bhavan, New Delhi in 1998. C.F.John

Biography

The works of C. F. John attempts to find the present context of Art, looking through the rational and emotional human existence. Born 1960 in Thrissur, Kerala, John presently lives and works in Bangalore, Karnataka. After his studies in Philosophy, John opted for the age old tradition of Gurukul and had his initiations’ in Art under Jyothi Sahi at Silvepura Bangalore. He has held his solo show at Cochin in 2005; Bangalore & Mainz and Saarbrucken, Germany in 1997 and Alliance Francaise, Bangalore in 1991. He has also had 3 two men shows, two in New Delhi in 2002 & 2003 and one in Bangalore in 2002. Debraj Goswami

Biography

In a photorealistic manner, Debraj constructs an image that narrates the negotiations between knowledge of Art and its twisted interpretations. Born 1973 in Serampore, West Bengal, Debraj presently lives and works in Baroda, Gujarat. He completed his BFA from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata (1997) and MFA from M.S.U, Baroda (1999). Biography

Born in 1965, is a self taught artist, who completed his education in law from Delhi University. Farhad Hussain

Biography

Born 1975 in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. Farhad completed his B.F.A in Painting from Kala Bhavan, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan in 2003 and M.F.A in Painting from M.S.University, Baroda in 2005. G. R. Iranna

Biography

G R IRANNA (born 1970) took an MFA in Painting from the College of Art, New Delhi (1994) and was artist in residence at the Wimbledon School of Art, London (1999-2000). Having studied in Bijapur, Gulbarga, and New Delhi, he has always carried with him, his early memories of growing up on a farm with him, and evolved a richly informed appreciation of Virashaiva religious poetry, Adilshahi architecture, and contemporary global art. These varied interests inform his paintings and sculptures, as well as his experiments with the installation form. Since the mid-1990s, Iranna has held 13 solo exhibitions of his work with galleries in New Delhi, Mumbai, London, Munich, Singapore, and Hong Kong, among other cities. He has shown in numerous group shows and been invited to participate in curated exhibitions, including, most recently, �Paths of Progression� (Bodhi Art and Saffronart, New Delhi and Bombay, 2005), �The Human Figure� (curated by Marta Jakimovicz, Threshold Art Gallery, New Delhi, 2006), and �Zip Files� (curated by Ranjit Hoskote, Foundation B&G, Bombay, 2009). In 2007, Lund Humphries, London, and Mapin Publishing, Ahmedabad, collaborated to publish a book on his work, Ranjit Hoskote�s The Dancer on the Horse: The Art of G R Iranna.

Jayashree Chakravarty

Biography

Born in 1956, Khoai, Tripura
She studied painting from wide range of art education institutions, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan and M. S. University, Baroda. She has also been an artist in residence at the École d’Art, Aix-en-Provence, France. She has been honoured with the Bombay Art Society Award, Mumbai (1980), II Bharat Bhavan Biennial Award (1988), British Council Visitorship grant (1989), French Govt. Scholarship (1991) and Honourable Mention Award, Asian Art Biennial, Dhaka, Bangladesh (1997) to mention some. She has held several solo shows since 1992 regularly in Mumbai, Chennai, New Delhi and Kolkata. Her major solo shows include: ‘Where the Sand meets the Sky’, New York and ‘New Narratives: Contemporary Art from India’, Chicago in 2007; ‘Route Map of Experience’, at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi (2003); ‘The Mind is its Own Place’, New York (2002) and at Ecole d’Art, Aix-en-Province, Paris (1995). Chakravarty is probably the only Indian artist to show at the prestigious Drawing Centre in New York (1998). She has been part of prestigious group shows in India and abroad like ‘Crossing Generations: Divergence’, Mumbai (2003); ‘Moving Ideas: A Contemporary Dialogue with India’, Vancouver (2001); ‘Boundlessly various and Everything Simultaneously’, curated by Peter Nagy, New York (2000); ‘Fire and Life’ in Canberra after an Indo-Australian residency in Calcutta and Brisbane (1997); ‘Watercolours: A Broader Spectrum’, Mumbai and ‘Women Artists of India: A Celebration of Independence’, Oakland in 1995. ‘India: Contemporary Art’, Amsterdam and ‘Indian Eclectics’, Sponsored by French Embassy and Sanskriti Prathisthan, New Delhi in 1989 to name a few. Her works are held by several prestigious collections in India and abroad.

Jogen Chowdhury

Biography

Born in 1939, Faridpur (presently Bangladesh), Jogen Chowdhury graduated in Fine Art from the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata in 1960. He later studied in France during 1965-1967 on Government Scholarship at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Back in India, he was appointed a Curator for the Rastrapati Bhawan before taking up teaching at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan where he later served as the Principal. Over the years, his works have been exhibited in various international exhibitions including the Triennales at New Delhi held in 1972, 1975 & 1978; at the Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil in 1979; Museum of Modern Art and Royal Academy of Art, London in 1982, Hirschorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C. in 1982; II Havana Biennale, Cuba in 1986 and Takaoka Municipal Museum of Art & Meguro Museum of Art, Japan in 1988; ‘Realms of Fantasy’, Hong Kong, 2004; ‘Inverting/Inventing Traditions’, Grosvenor Vadehra, London, 2007. He has been awarded at II Havana Biennale, 1986 and at International Prints Biennale, Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal in 1995. He was honoured with Kalidas Samman by Madhya Pradesh Government in 2001. Besides these honours, he has received numerous National Awards. He lives and works in Santiniketan.

K. G. Subramanyan

Biography

Born in 1924, Kerala. Subramanyan studied at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan between 1944-48 under the guidance of Nandalal Bose, Binode Behari Mukherjee and Ramkinkar Baij. He later studied at Slade School of Art, London on the British Council Research Scholarship during 1955-56. He received the John D. Rockefeller III Fund Fellowship in 1966. He was appointed Fellow of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1985 and the Christensen Fellow at St. Catherine’s College, Oxford, U.K. in 1987-88. After serving as the Dean at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda in 1989 he was appointed Professor Emeritus at Santiniketan. In 1976 he visited General Assembly of the World Crafts Council as Member Delegate in Mexico. The Government of India honoured him with a Padma Shri in 1975; he received the Kalidas Samman in 1981 and the Shiromani Kala Puraskar in 1994. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions and in many major Biennales, including the Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil, 1961 & 1971; the Tokyo Biennale, Japan, 1964; and the Menton Biennale, France, 1976. He has also held exhibition in Takaoka Municipal Museum of Art & Meguro Museum of Art, Japan, 1988; Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, London, 1982 & 1988. In 2003, a retrospective of his work was held at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi and Mumbai. He lives and works in Baroda, Gujarat.

Kanchan Chander

Biography

Born 1957 in New Delhi, Kanchan studied art for her Foundation Year at Weisensee Kunst Hochschule in Berlin and BFA in painting and printmaking from Delhi College of Art, New Delhi. During 1979-80 she was a Guest student in print making at College of Art, Chile. Recipient of a Grant from Lalit Kala Akademi, Delhi; French Government Scholarship, Ecole Des Beaux, Paris and Fellowship from the Ministry of Human Resources Development. Delhi, she was a Lecturer at College of Art, Delhi between 1986-2005. To-date she has held 13 solo shows in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Nepal and Japan and has also participated in various group shows across India and overseas including Norwegian International Print show, Triennale India; International Print Biennale at France, Bhopal, Yugoslavia, Japan and the UK. She is a Founder member of Indian Printmakers Guild and co-curated ‘See Through’ with Sushma Bahl and ‘Combine’ for Gallery Alternations and Vis-à-Vis. The awards to her credit include those of the Yuva Mahotsava; Sahitya Kala Parishad; Women’s All India A.I.F.A.C.S and International Print Biennale from Bradford, UK.

Lalitha Lajmi

Biography

Born in 1932, had no formal training in art, but reached a maturity in her work through a prolonged and deep association with the field. She holds several solo and group shows to her credit both in the national and international levels. Besides which, she has also participated in various international print biennales and has been awarded for her work by the ICCR for travel grants to (then) East and West Germany for exhibitions, the Bombay Art Society, the Maharashtra Art Society. Laxma Goud

Biography

Born in 1940, Nizampur (Andhra Pradesh), Laxma Goud completed his Diploma in Drawing and Painting from Government College of Fine Arts and Architecture, Hyderabad in 1963 and did his Post-Diploma in mural painting and printmaking at M. S. University, Baroda from 1963-1965, where he worked under Professor K. G. Subramanyan. He was Head of the Department at the Sarojini Naidu School of Performing Arts, Fine Art and Communication, University of Hyderabad for several years. He was appointed as a Graphic Designer at Doordarshan for 15 years. He has been awarded the State Lalit Kala Award, Andhra Pradesh; Silver & Gold Medal by Hyderabad Art Society. He had his first solo exhibition in his hometown in 1965 and has held numerous exhibitions since then. Some of his important exhibitions include the Tokyo Print Biennale, Japan, 1976; Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil, 1977; the Royal Academy of Art, London, 1982. He lives and works in Hyderabad and Jaipur.

Biography

Born in 1973, Manish. Nayanaa Kanodia

Biography

Born 1950, Nayanaa Kanodia grew up in Delhi, graduating from Lady Shri Ram College, in Economics Honours and winning the National Scholarship of the Government of India. An Economist turned painter, Nayanaa is entirely a self-taught artist working in L' art Naif, except for a year's apprenticeship with Anjolie Ela Menon. She has exhibited widely in India and abroad, in solo and group shows, especially in museums and art galleries in London and Paris. In 1998, she was selected by The Commonwealth Institute, to hold a solo show in their newly renovated complex in London. In 2001she was invited by the Victoria and Albert Museum, UK to exhibit her work and to give a demonstration of her technique. She has also conducted several art workshops and participated in camps in various parts on India and overseas. Nayanaa’s work is held in many public and private collections in India and abroad including Museums. She lives in Mumbai.

Neeraj Bakshi

Biography

Born in 1970. Neeraj completed his BFA from Kashmir University in 1992 .He held his first solo show at IIC, New Delhi in 1995. Thereafter in 1998 he held a solo show abroad in Nairobi, Kenya, Academy of Fine Arts in 2000 and Art Alive in 2004. He has to his credit several group shows in India and abroad. Neeraj is recipient of many prestigious grants like the Creative Fund Grant, Luxemburg in 1995 and INLAKS Grant, London in 1997. He has also received fellowship award from ministry of H.R.D. for outstanding artist in 1996-1997. He lives and works in New Delhi.

Biography

Born in 1965, West Bengal. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata, followed by Master’s Degree from the College of Art, New Delhi. Partha Shaw

Biography

Born 1971 in Kolkata, Partha completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Kala Bhavan, Shantiniketan in 1992 and Master’s in Visual Arts from Rabindra Bharati, Kolkata in 1994. Biography

Born in 1960, completed his B.F.A. from Andhra University and M.F.A from Central University, Hyderabad. Reji K.P

Biography

Born 1972 in Kerala, Reji has completed his BFA & MFA in Painting from M.S. University, Baroda in 1998 & 2000 respectively. He has held 4 solo shows Since then, he has participated in many solo shows ‘Just Above My Head’, Mumbai in 2006; Bangalore in 2001; Show curated Nirali Lal, Faculty of Fine Arts, Baroda in 2000 and Kerala in 1999. He has participated in several group exhibitions in various places like Bangkok, Mumbai, Kolkata, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Vadodara & Kochi. He lives and works in Baroda, Gujarat.

Rini Dhumal

Biography

Born 1948 in Bengal, Rini completed her Master’s in Painting from M.S.University, Baroda. She has held over 25 solo shows including those at Delhi, Mumbai, Baroda, Ahmedabad and Hyderabad in India and Paris, Chile, Germany and Spain overseas. Her work has been exhibited in numerous group shows throughout India and aboard. She is a recipient of Research Scholarship and Senior Fellowship from Ministry of Human Resource, New Delhi as well as a French Govt. Scholarship to study in Paris. The awards to her credit include the Chancellors Gold Medal from Baroda; Governors Gold Medal from Calcutta; AIFACS Award; National Award of the Lalit Kala Academy and M. S. Randhawa Award- all three in New Delhi. Rini lives and works in Baroda.

S. H. Raza

Biography

Born in 1922, Babaria (Madhya Pradesh), Raza graduated from Sir J.J. School of Arts, Mumbai in 1943 and became one of the founding members of Progressive Artists’ Group in 1947. He received the French Government Scholarship in 1950 to study at Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He is a recipient of Prix de la Critique, Paris, 1956; Rajkeeya Samman and Kalidas Samman by Government of Madhya Pradesh, 1978 & 1997; Officier de L’Ordre Des Arts et des Lettres by Government of France, 2002. He was conferred Padma Shri in 1981 and Padma Bhushan in 2007 by the Government of India. He was honoured with the Fellowship of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1983. In his long career, Raza has held several solo and group exhibitions in India and abroad which include Biennale de Venice, 1956; Biennale de Menton, 1964, 66, 68, 72 & 76; Biennale du Moroc, Rabat, 1963; Biennale, Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal, 1986; Biennial of Havana, 1987; Jane Woorhese Zimmerli Art Museum, New Jersey, 2002; ‘Swasti’, NGMA, New Delhi, 2007. Several publications have been released on his life and work which include ‘Bindu: Space and Time in Raza’s Vision’ by Geeti Sen, 1997; ‘Raza’ by Ashok Vajpeyi, 2002 and ‘A Life in Art: Raza’ written & edited by Ashok Vajpeyi, 2007. S. Harsha Vardhana

Biography

Born 1958 in New Delhi, Harsha did his M.Sc. in Bio Science from The Birla Institute of Technology & Sciences, Pilani in 1980 and diploma in Business Management. He is a self taught artist and held his solo exhibitions at Singapore; Chennai; Mumbai and thrice in New Delhi. He has also participated in several group shows across India and abroad including First Biennale of Contemporary Art, Romania in 2005; Indian artist for France, New Delhi Young contemporary artists, New Delhi in 2004; 2D / 3D, Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre, Hong Kong in 2003; Chennai and Mumbai in 2002; New Delhi in 2001; Post Modern Indian Art, USA in 1997; Bharat Bhawan Biennial of Contemporary Indian Art, Bhopal in 1996. Sakti Burman

Biography

Born in 1935, Kolkata, Sakti Burman did his graduation in painting from Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata in 1956. He went on to study at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris and was awarded with the Prix des Etrangers by this institution. He has also received the Silver Medal at the Salon de Montmorency and an award from the town of L’Isle-Adam. He has held several solo shows and also participated in major group shows across India and abroad which include V International Triennale, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi; Paris Biennale, France. His works, along with those of Picasso, Chagall and Miro were exhibited in Japan in 1997. He was invited to participate in Sigmund Freud’s ‘Interpretation of Dreams’, an exhibition organised by University Art Museum, Binghamton, New York, at the Historisches Museum, Vienna in 2000. Several publications and illustrations have been released on his works including a book on his work and life ‘Sakti Burman - Dreamers on the Ark’ has been published in 2001 and the most recently released is the portfolio of Monographs by Lalit Kala Akademi, 2007. He lives and works in Paris.

Sharmi Chowdhury

Biography

Born in 1974. She completed her BFA in Painting from Kala Bhavana, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan in 2003 & M.F.A. in Painting from M.S University Baroda in 2005. She has held her solo show at Sarjan Art Gallery Baroda in 2005. She has also participated in many group shows in Kolkata, Mumbai, Baroda and New York. She has won Camlin Art Award in 2003 and Nokia Art Award in 1998 and has received Kalabhavan merit scholarship in 1998 – 2002. She lives and works in Baroda.

Shipra Bhattacharya

Biography

Born in 1954 in West Bengal, Shipra did her graduation from Calcutta University in 1975 and studied art at the Govt.College of Art & Craft and at the College of Visual Arts Calcutta, under guidance of Shuvaprasanna in 1977 and 1980 respectively.. Starting with her first solo show in her home town, she has held over 12 solo exhibitions across India and abroad. She has also participated in numerous group shows including at Singapore, Hong Kong, London, New York, Germany and Dubai. Four portfolios of her drawings and graphics have already been brought out and her work is held in important public, corporate and private collections both in India and abroad. She lives and works in Kolkata.

Shuvaprasanna

Biography

Born 1947 in Calcutta, Shuva graduated from the Indian College of Art, Kolkata and received his subsequent training in printmaking at workshops including those in USA and Germany. An active member of the Calcutta Painters’ Group, Shuva is a teacher, facilitator and painter all in one. His work has been exhibited in over 30 solo shows and many more group exhibitions in India and abroad including those held at the Birla Academy Calcutta, Gallery Les Hirondelles Geneva, Sotheby’s and Arts India New York, Christies London and IGNCA New Delhi. He has also participated in a number of international projects, workshops and art camps, more important amongst which are the Museum of Modern Art, Sitomo, Japan; Horniman Museum London and the German Festival in India. He has a number of awards and publications to his credit including the AIFACS, State LKA and Birla Academy Awards. His work can be seen in many public and private collections in India and abroad including the NGMA and LKA, Delhi; Air India; Times of India Group and WHO Geneva. Shuva lives and works in Kolkata.

Sujata Bajaj

Biography

An artist with a deep neck for tribal art was born in 1958, Jaipur, Rajasthan and graduated and Mastered in Art and Painting from Pune, Maharashtra. An influence of tribal art and culture led her to a Ph.d in Fine Arts, on ‘Indian Tribal Art’, and this reflect greatly in her works. She also studied at Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts, Paris, on French government scholarship in 1988-89. Sujata has held around 25 individual shows in India and over 20 international shows and participated in more the a dozen group shows across India and abroad including in U.K, France, Norway and Saffronart in Los Angeles in 2001. She was conferred with Chancellor’s Award S.N.D.T University, Mumbai, selected for International Youth Achievement by Cambridge University, UK.in1986 and also holder of ‘Raza Award’ in 2003, Bombay Art Society Award and the Maharashtra State Art Award. She lives and works in Paris.

T. M. Azis

Biography

Azis plays with the graphic value of an image, making viewing both an inquisitive and interrogative act. Born 1962 in Trichur, Kerala, Azis presently lives and works in Bangalore, Karnataka. He did his Bachelors from College of Fine Arts, Trivandrum (1987) and M.F.A from Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi (1991). Starting up with the first solo show in 1986 in Trivandrum, he has held shows in Bangalore, Pondichery and Mumbai in 1999 in addition to his participation in over 40 group shows including ‘Emerging India’, presented by Art Alive Gallery and S.A. Fine Arts, London, held at London in 2007; 'The Magical Mystery Tour', Bangalore in 2002 ; 'Temples of the Mind-2' , New Delhi in 2002; '7th Harmony Show', Mumbai in 2002; 'Walls of memories', Bangalore in 2003; 'Quilted', Bangalore in 2003; 'Waterlines', New Delhi in 2003 including 10th Triennale in 2001 and First Biennale on Contemporary Arts, Arad, Romania in 2005. Awarded by 12th All India Exhibition of Art, Bangalore in 1989, Regional Art Exhibition, Chennai in 1992 and 25th State Exhibition of Art, Kerala Lalit Kala Academy in 1991.

Thota Vaikuntam

Biography

Born in 1942, Boorugupalli (Andhra Pradesh), Vaikuntam studied at the College of Fine Arts and Architecture, Hyderabad from where he graduated in 1960. In 1971, he won the Lalit Kala Akademi Fellowship to study Painting and Printmaking at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University, Baroda under Prof. K.G. Subramanyan. He won the Bharat Bhavan Biennale Award, Bhopal in 1988 and the National Award awarded by the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1993. He has also received the National Award for Art Direction of film ‘Daasi’ in 1988-89. He has held several solo shows and participated in numerous group exhibitions, prominent being VII International Triennale, Lalit Kala Akademi, 1991; ‘Art Encounter’, Kassel, Germany, 1992; ‘India-Encounter II’, Lee Arthur Studio, New York, 1994-95. A retrospective show of his works was organised by Art Alive Gallery in New Delhi in 2005. The gallery has also published a book on his life and art written by Sushma Bahl. He lives and works in Hyderabad.

Walter Emilio D'Souza

Biography

Born in 1957,Mumbai and did his Masters in Fine Art, Print Making from Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda in 1983. He was a visiting Faculty at School of Architecture, K.L.Campus, Ahmedabad, during 1988-2003 and meanwhile continued his exhibitions in India and abroad. His major solo exhibitions have been in Ahmedabad in 1999, Mumbai in 1995 and 1999 in New Delhi in 1991. Among his participation in several group shows, those held recently were in Kolkata in 2003, New Delhi in 2003 and 2000 besides showing up in the 7th International Print Triennial, Finland in 1993.Walter lives and works in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

Yusuf Arakkal

Biography

Born in 1945 in Kerala, Arakkal completed his Diploma in painting from Chitrakala Parishath College of Art, Bangalore in 1973. For his specialisation in graphic print-making he went to National Art Academy Community Studios, Garhi, New Delhi in 1980. He has been honoured with several awards including the National Award in 1983; a Special Award at the Third Asian Art Biennale, Dhaka in 1986; the Karnataka Rajyotsva Award in 1999; Lorenso-De-Medici Silver medal at the 4th Florence International Biennale of Contemporary Art, Italy in 2003; Lorenso-De-Medici Gold medal at 5th Florence International Biennale of Contemporary Art, Italy. He visited Arad International Biennale of Art at Romania as an International Artistic Committee Member in 2005. He has participated in many shows since his first in 1975, including the Sixth Biennale de Beaux Art, Beaumont, France; Third Asian Art Biennale, Bangladesh; Sixth International Triennale, New Delhi and Ninth International Biennale de Sao Paulo, Brazil. He lives and works in Bangalore.
